What’s that commotion, you ask? Is it a mysterious creature lurking in the shadows? Is it the rumble of an approaching Balrog?! NOPE! It’s two sauced hobbits slamming down a second pint of “Unknown Beast” everyone’s beloved Schwarzbier!
We BARELY got things rolling again after the Hurricane Helene shutdown, but we managed to squeeze this in JUST IN TIME for Halloween in AVL (SORRY DURHAM 🙁). Originally brewed by our former Brewer and good friend Mike Fuller, who now leads @parallelbrewing, this seemed incredibly fitting to pair with our fresh WCIPA collab release with them!
We started things off with a base of @Riverbend Chesapeake Pilsner and a whole mess of specialty and roasted malts from @proximitymalt before hopping it with Hallertauer Mittelfruh throughout the boil and smashing it full of Perle in the Whirlpool. We implemented our traditional German Lager treatment otherwise: slow and cold fermentation, spunding for 100% natural carbonation, and a long rest in a Horizontal Lagering Tank.
It starts off with notes of roasty Cacao, sweet Hazelnut, toasted Wheat bread, and just a hint of dem beans. Got me thinkin’ ‘bout dem beans…uh, right…then this finishes with the extra clean, crisp, and dry character we strive for. Don’t let the appearance of this beast fool you, it’s easily one of our favorite Lager offerings to date, and maintains that high level of crushability you’ve come to expect from our Chippy Boi™ Lager Program.
