Western North Carolina was hit hard by Hurricane Helene. Breweries, businesses, and families are facing devastation for months and years to come, and the road to recovery has been very, very tough. But as brewers, we understand the power of community.
That’s why we worked our asses off at the beginning of the disaster and launched “Higher Calling”, a collaborative Hazy IPA project to raise funds for those affected. We provided a base recipe (and heavy encouragement to have fun with it!), a list of suppliers providing donated/discounted ingredients, a label template, and a bevy of social media assets, and invited breweries across the globe to brew the beer and donate 100% of net profits to the North Carolina Craft Brewers Fund (run by @ncbrewersguild!) to help fund grants specifically to help rebuild the WNC Beer Community. Grant Applications are live if you’re in WNC, by the way!
We were without potable water for 53 days, but as soon as we could, we trucked in potable water and brewed up our own version of this beer. We’re struggling very hard ourselves to just keep the lights on amongst the devastation, but our community needs us, and so here we are!
For our version, of course we had to Double Dry Hop it, so we partnered up with @riverbendmalt, @yakimachiefhops, and @eggershopfarm to produce this absolute gem. 100% Riverbend Malt, comprised of Cumberland Pilsner, Appalachian Wheat, Hull and Oats, and Chit Malt. Hopped aggressively with Mosaic in the Whirlpool, hot dipped in the FV with Citra Dynaboost, dry-hopped once with BRU-1, and then dry-hopped with a mountain of Mosaic, Citra, BRU-1, and Egger’s Farms Motueka.
We are so humbled by all the outpouring of support from breweries to suppliers to accounts, to the individual customers. We whipped this up as fast as we could, and we wish we could have worked with more of the amazing suppliers that helped keep this project alive.
Thank you for being part of Higher Calling. We look forward to rebuilding our community, one beer at a time. The support has been overwhelming so far! BUT PLEASE ASK YOUR LOCAL BREWERY TO PARTICIPATE! IT’S NOT TOO LATE! WE ALL STILL DESPERATELY NEED YOUR HELP!
