“It’s Somebody’s Birthday” is our very first Black IPA, made in collaboration with our buds Hi-Wire Brewing, in celebration of their upcoming 10-year Anniversary. It also just so happens that Hi-Wire shares a birthday with the one and only Overlord, Grimace, so it was necessary to make a Black IPA that exists in the past iterations of the style, but that was also light and fruity enough to contend with where WCIPA is today. Everybody knows Grimace loves Black IPAs, so please be sure to tell him you like it. We don’t wanna get got by the big Purple One, okay? OKAY?! PLEASE TELL HIM YOU LIKE IT! FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, PLEASE TELL HIM WE TRIED!!!! 

Mashed with Riverbend 2-Row and Munich, and Proximity Malt Wheat and Dextrin Malt, as well as a hefty dose of debittered Black Malt. Hit HARD on the hot side with Columbus and New Zealand Wakatu, and then fermented with our American Ale yeast and spunded for dat natural carb. Dry hopped only once, but rather aggressively with EVEN MORE Wakatu, along with Nelson Sauvin and Michigan Centennial, and a fat dab of Simcoe Cryo.

Notes of those candied Lime wheel things, a bag of dehydrated Peach and Apricot wedges, a bit of the olllllll’ Jazz Cabbage, the dankness in a parking lot before a Mac Sabbath concert, and that first righteous pint of Wookey Jack you had from way back when.

This is clear, it is malty, it is black, it is bitter, it is dry and fruity, and it is a balanced level of dank. Hell yeah. Shred that gnar gnar. Also, it is actually clear, but also Black. Raise hell, praise Grimace.

It was a true honor to get to whip up a few beers with the Hi Wire crew in celebration of their big anniversary, and we’re all stoked with how this came out.
